Suspected ‘Space Debris’ Found After Fiery Landing Near Outback WA Mine Site

The object is suspected to be carbon fibre space debris, possibly a rocket tank, with authorities coordinating a multi-agency response to identify its origin.

  • About 2:00pm on Saturday, mine workers found a burning object near a remote access road about 30 kilometres east of Newman in the Pilbara region and alerted emergency services.
  • Police said initial assessments indicated the debris was carbon fibre, possibly a composite-overwrapped pressure vessel or rocket tank, and `in consultation with the Australian Transport Safety Bureau , the object has been ruled out as originating from a commercial aircraft`.
  • Photographs of the debris show a black, dome-shaped object with flames, and WA Police coordinated a multi-agency response with the mine operator and the Department of Fire and Emergency Services.
  • Police said the object has been secured and there is no current threat to public safety, while the Australian Space Agency is investigating its origins.
  • Past incidents show that debris from Indian Space Research Organisation rockets has landed in WA, with the last case in Green Head more than two years ago, and some debris stranded for months before moving to Scitech in Perth.
