Hochul Calls to 'Turn Down the Temperature,' Prevent More Violence
Washington officials strongly condemned the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk, emphasizing the need to end political violence and calling for unity across party lines.
On September 10, 2025, conservative activist Charlie Kirk was fatally shot while delivering an outdoor speech to students on the campus of Utah Valley University located in Orem, Utah.
The shooting followed broader concerns about increasing political violence, with authorities arresting 22-year-old Tyler Robinson on suspicion of aggravated murder and related charges.
Many Republican and Democratic officials, including Washington Gov. Bob Ferguson and U.S. Senators Maria Cantwell and Patty Murray, condemned the killing and called for unity against political violence.
Jim Walsh, Washington State Republican Party Chair, expressed condolences, while New York Gov. Kathy Hochul warned of escalating threats to institutions and pledged a bipartisan meeting to reduce tensions.
Governor Hochul urged New Yorkers to tone down reckless rhetoric and develop plans to prevent future violence, emphasizing disagreements must be resolved through voices and votes, not violence.
