Voters Reject Amendment that Would Block Government From Closing Places of Worship During Emergencies
On Tuesday, Wisconsin voters approved two Republican-authored constitutional amendments while rejecting a third measure that would have prohibited government officials from closing places of worship during declared emergencies.
Voters narrowly approved the partial veto amendment 50.7% to 49.3%, preventing the governor from using partial veto authority to create or increase taxes and fees.
The second successful amendment passed with 56.4% of the vote, banning government and public educational institutions from discriminating against or granting preferential treatment based on race, sex, or ethnicity.
Defeated by 52% of voters, the religious freedom referendum failed, leaving state and local authorities able to restrict religious gatherings during emergencies despite critics labeling it a public health threat.
Conservative backers, including the Wisconsin Institute for Law & Liberty , claim these amendments hold government accountable, while opponents argue they restrict efforts to improve conditions for underserved communities.
