Voter apathy hits Kano rerun elections in Ungogo LGA

Only 7,834 of 71,914 registered voters participated as Ramadan fasting and election's minor status led to widespread voter apathy, INEC and officials said.

  • At mid-morning, the Ungogo Local Government Area rerun reported unexpectedly low turnout, with polling units showing very few voters around 11am.
  • INEC said the timing during Ramadan fasting lowered turnout, and Ambassador Abdu Zango said many voters saw the bye-election as a minor contest.
  • Numbers at specific units show sparse turnout: Panisau polling unit had six votes by 10:30am and 003 Kera Panisau Ward had 19 votes of 804 registered.
  • The NAN reported that of 71,914 registered voters, only 7,834 were accredited, with 7,800 valid votes and 34 rejected ballots, and the Electoral Commissioner said there were no security issues.
  • Our reporter observed that presiding officer Khadijah Adam Sani said INEC ballot papers showed no sign of PDP, NNPP or ADC across all polling units.
