Volunteer firefighter dies while fighting blaze in Annapolis County
The fire was declared under control at 1.19 hectares, and the department said donations for his family will be handled through its leadership.
On Thursday, 40-year-old volunteer firefighter Alexandru Uichita died after suffering a sudden medical episode while battling a wildfire in Moschelle, Annapolis County; colleagues' resuscitation attempts failed.
The Moschelle wildfire, spanning 1.19 hectares, was declared under control Thursday evening; Uichita had served with the Bridgetown department since November 2024, spending his final moments serving his community.
Nova Scotia Natural Resources Minister Kim Masland praised firefighters' "extraordinary courage and selflessness" in a Saturday statement, noting the tragedy reminds residents of the risks volunteers face daily.
Surviving Uichita are his wife and three young children; the department will manage public donations through its treasurer, ensuring funds reach the family directly and avoiding crowdfunding platforms.
The Bridgetown department expressed deep gratitude for his dedicated service while asking the public to respect the family's privacy during this difficult time as they navigate life without him.
