Large-Scale Ukrainian Drone Attack Kills Three in Moscow Region, Says Russia
Russian officials said 556 drones were intercepted as strikes hit homes, an oil refinery entrance and Sheremetyevo Airport.
A large-scale Ukrainian drone attack on the Moscow region killed three people and injured 12 others early Sunday, regional governor Andrei Vorobiev reported.
In recent months, Ukraine has intensified strikes on key Russian energy facilities, which Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky described as legitimate targets allowing Russia to continue its war effort.
Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said 12 people were injured when drones hit an oil refinery, while attacks in Khimki, Pogorelki, and Subbotino caused additional casualties and drone debris struck Sheremetyevo Airport.
Despite drone wreckage on its territory, Sheremetyevo authorities reported that passenger terminals remain calm and services are stable. Authorities are investigating the attack motives.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky pledged retaliation for deadly Russian attacks on Kyiv, while Russia continued drone and shelling campaigns against Ukraine's Dnipropetrovsk region, injuring eight people.
Russian television channels — the First Channel, Russia-1 and NTV — have understated the scale of one of the largest Ukrainian attacks on Moscow, reporting to the Agency on 17 May.
