Upgrades Complete at Naramata's Historic Adra Tunnel
Crews resurfaced trails, improved parking and added new visitor amenities before the historic tunnel reopened to the public.
After months of work along the Kettle Valley Rail Trail, the Regional District of Okanagan-Similkameen announced the Adra Tunnel above Naramata is fully open, with crews having left the site and all temporary closures removed.
The recent upgrades build on a three-year restoration project completed in May 2025, when the 483-metre tunnel first reopened to the public in decades after Woodwackers 2.0 spent years restoring it.
Construction crews focused on "improving the safety, usability, and long-term sustainability of this historically significant section of the KVR," upgrading trail resurfacing and parking areas while installing benches, picnic tables, bike racks, garbage cans, split-rail fencing, wayfinding signage, and a pit toilet.
Visitors can access the tunnel eight kilometres from the Glenfir parking lot or 2.5 km via the Smethurst parking area, with the RDOS stating the project enhances "the experience and accessibility for residents and visitors alike."
Regional district staff collaborated with Woodwackers 2.0, Recreation Sites and Trails BC, and local contractors on the project, with the RDOS thanking "the community, trail users, and residents for their patience and cooperation during construction.
