Visitor to Grand Canyon watchtower climbed on historic furniture, broke Hopi headpiece, NPS says
Rangers say the man fled before they could identify him, and the damaged Hopi headpiece by Fred Kabotie has been secured by museum staff.
On June 17, a male visitor damaged a historic Hopi headpiece at the Desert View Watchtower within Grand Canyon National Park after climbing on furniture to take a photograph.
Witnesses reported the man climbed onto handcrafted furniture near the fireplace, which tipped beneath his weight, causing him to strike and break the artifact created by legendary Hopi artist Fred Kabotie.
Rangers describe the suspect as a white man in his 60s or 70s, about 6 feet tall with a slender build, accompanied by an adult woman believed to be his daughter who left shortly afterward.
Park employees provided the man with first aid for a minor injury following the tumble, but the pair departed before law enforcement rangers could verify his identity.
National Park Service officials released a statement Wednesday requesting public assistance to identify the individuals, urging witnesses to email GRCA_Information@nps.gov with information.
