Virginia county sues to block Trump from building his arch
The suit says the 250-foot project would endanger emergency access, alter flight paths and harm historic views near Arlington National Cemetery.
- On Thursday, The Arlington County sued the Interior Department and National Park Service, seeking to block President Donald Trump's proposed 250-foot arch modeled on the Paris Arc de Triomphe near Arlington National Cemetery.
- The suit argues the project within a busy traffic corridor will cause "significant harm" to residents and threatens to increase noise and air pollution in Arlington by necessitating flight diversions at Reagan National Airport.
- Three veterans and a historian also sued, claiming the project destroys historic sightlines between the Lincoln Memorial and Arlington National Cemetery. The Federal Aviation Administration requires floodlights, diverging from red obstruction light standards mandated on the 555-foot Washington Monument.
- A federal judge last month ordered the Trump administration to provide 48 hours' notice before site activity. The arch is part of Trump's broader push to remake Washington, including renovating the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool and East Potomac Park.
- The 250-foot project could win approval as early as next month, though The White House and Interior Department did not comment. Trump previously stated he would convert the arch into a military complex capable of deploying drones and positioning snipers.
