Thousands Protest Nationwide After Fatal ICE Shooting
Protesters across the U.S. demand federal immigration reforms and accountability following the fatal shooting of Renee Good by an ICE agent, with over 1,000 demonstrations planned, organizers said.
- On Jan. 7 in Minneapolis, 37-year-old Renee Good was shot and killed by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer, sparking protests and vigils across the United States.
- DHS officials say the ICE officer fired in self-defense after Renee Good tried to ram agents, but bystander video and local leaders disputed that, soon after 2,000 federal officers were deployed.
- Organizers said civil liberties and migrant-rights groups including the American Civil Liberties Union, MoveOn Civic Action, Voto Latino and Indivisible planned more than 1,000 weekend events with local turnouts from 375 to thousands at Powderhorn Park, Minneapolis.
- With tensions rising, Minnesota and Hennepin County law enforcement opened a separate inquiry while local officials say the federal presence caused school closures and an 80% drop in business customers.
- While protesters in Minneapolis demanded federal agents leave, DHS reported nearly 300 assaults and 66 car attacks amid two recent DHS-related shootings.
