Vietnam Says Trade Talks with US Nearly Completed; US Officials More Cautious
Vietnam says the deal could ease tariff risks as talks continue over data rules, industrial overcapacity and intellectual property protections.
On Wednesday, Vietnamese Deputy Prime Minister Pham Gia Tuc announced that Hanoi has "essentially completed" talks on a US trade deal and submitted final remarks to Washington, aiming to sign the agreement soon.
Negotiations have lasted months, with transshipment and non-tariff barriers identified as main sticking points, while the country faces pressure from ongoing US investigations into trade practices and potential additional tariffs.
US Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs Michael George DeSombre urged Vietnam to address trade imbalances, specifically recommending review of industries where foreign ownership is capped below 50 per cent.
Jennifer Wicks, the US Ambassador to Vietnam, reiterated that negotiations are ongoing, pressing Vietnam to adapt regulatory frameworks on data protection and pricing to facilitate investment for American firms.
President To Lam has been invited to the G20 summit in Florida this December, with hopes that a final trade deal could be sealed then, provided both sides resolve remaining concerns.
