Victoria to power schools, hospitals with state-run energy
- Victoria's government revived the State Electricity Commission in 2023 to power schools, hospitals, and government operations with renewable energy from July 1, 2025.
- The SEC, originally established in 1918 and privatised from 1994, was reinstated with a $1 billion investment to develop 4.5 gigawatts of renewable energy by 2035 to offset coal plant closures.
- The SEC is projected to deliver 2,200 GWh of electricity in the upcoming financial year, accounting for approximately 5% of Victoria's overall energy usage, positioning it as the fifth-largest commercial and industrial electricity provider in the state.
- Premier Jacinta Allan stated that the SEC aims to provide affordable, dependable renewable energy under public ownership to help reduce living expenses, though experts consider the government's expectation that this will lower wholesale prices to be overly optimistic.
- The SEC's profits will fund new renewable projects, supporting Victoria’s transition and aiming to stabilize prices, reduce emissions, and benefit families and businesses statewide.
