Vernon Outdoors Club Marks 50 Years of Fun in the Fresh Air
About 50 members marked the milestone by kayaking, biking and walking more than 50 kilometres, followed by a dinner for over 100 attendees.
On Saturday, Sept. 19, just over 50 members of the Vernon Outdoors Club marked the organization's 50th anniversary by completing a 50-kilometre challenge on Kalamalka Lake and the local rail trail.
Former president George Reid suggested the kilometre-per-year distance last fall to showcase the club's longstanding dedication to outdoor activity, inclusiveness, and respect for nature.
Following a mock race to Kal Beach in Coldstream, more than 100 members gathered for a dinner to share memories, with the club boasting about 300 members including life members over age 80.
Co-Chair Deb Thrall emphasized that members join for their love of hiking, biking, cycling, and water activities, stating, "We value physical health but also find a social aspect fulfilled in being with others who are like-minded."
The club maintains a philosophy where "Safety is primary, next to enjoyment," while dedicating volunteer time to preserving trails in the Vernon area for future generations to enjoy.
