Man arrested after fire at Ajax home linked to Liberal MP Salma Zahid

Roshvin Crofton faces new arson charges after an Oshawa home was destroyed and several nearby residences were damaged, police said.

  • On Monday, the Toronto Police Service charged 24-year-old Roshvin Crofton of Ajax with 14 new offences following an August 24 fire that destroyed an unoccupied Oshawa home. Crofton previously faced charges for an August 27 arson at Liberal MP Salma Zahid's residence.
  • The Oshawa fire occurred just two days before the arson at Zahid's home, where vehicles were doused in an accelerant and ignited. Investigators say the August 24 blaze destroyed the vacant property and damaged neighbouring residences.
  • An unoccupied home was destroyed and neighbouring homes also 'suffered significant damage,' Toronto police said. One nearby residence was occupied, but residents escaped safely during the early morning blaze.
  • A joint investigation by the Toronto Police Service and Durham Regional Police Service identified Crofton as the suspect. He faces multiple counts including attempted arson and disregard for human life, though charges have not yet been tested in court.
  • Police continue to search for a second suspect who remains at large in connection with both incidents. Anyone with information is asked to contact Toronto police or Crime Stoppers as the investigation remains active.
