Venezuelan nonprofit says 16 verified prisoners released under Venezuela’s amnesty

The amnesty law excludes prisoners convicted of serious crimes and restricts released detainees, while over 600 political prisoners remain detained, Foro Penal said.

  • On Thursday, Venezuela's acting President Delcy Rodrguez signed the amnesty into law, and Venezuela-based prisoners' rights group Foro Penal said on Sunday it verified 16 releases under the new law.
  • Opposition leaders had pushed for a full amnesty intended to benefit opposition members, activists, human rights defenders and journalists detained for political reasons.
  • Releases under the law are precautionary substitutions for imprisonment, banning released detainees from press, travel, and politics, while human rights organizations distrust exclusions of imprisoned military personnel and serious crimes.
  • National Assembly leader Jorge Rodríguez said on Saturday that 1,557 applications were being processed and hundreds were released, but Foro Penal reported 464 released and more than 600 remain detained.
  • The Venezuelan Red Cross said on Sunday it would accompany releases, and verified 16 releases appeared within days of the law's signing Thursday.
