Venezuela says three people with confirmed hantavirus have died
The health ministry said the deaths are unrelated to two other cases under investigation and that there is no evidence of person-to-person spread.
- On Tuesday, Venezuela's health ministry reported three confirmed hantavirus deaths in eastern Anzoategui state, with officials stating the virus spreads through inhalation of particles from rodent waste in rural areas.
- The ministry reported the virus is transmitted by rodents in rural and agricultural areas, principally by inhaling particles of urine, feces or saliva in enclosed spaces. They emphasized there is no scientific evidence of person-to-person transmission in the country.
- Separately, two health professionals died in Barinas state; the ministry reported these cases remain unconnected to the Anzoategui incidents and are specific events that do not represent a risk to the health of the community.
- While the ministry maintains local transmission is rodent-borne, The Andes virus is the only known hantavirus that can spread through close, prolonged human-to-human contact, underscoring medical personnel protocols.
- Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported last month it ended its response to a hantavirus outbreak linked to a cruise ship, nearly two months after the virus killed three people.
