Coquihalla Hwy. Closed After Semi-Truck Engulfed in Flames
A semi-trailer fire sparked a small wildfire and left toxic material on the road, forcing cleanup crews to keep northbound lanes closed.
On Monday night, a semi-trailer fire shut down the northbound lanes of the Coquihala Highway between Hope and Merritt, resulting in a prolonged closure as cleanup operations began.
Police reported the semi-trailer was "fully engulfed" in flames on the highway's right shoulder, igniting adjacent forested areas and prompting the BC Wildfire Service to suppress the blaze.
DriveBC warned of "toxic material on the roadway" near the Coldwater Exit, requiring environmental cleanup crews to address the site before traffic could resume.
Around 7 p.m. Tuesday, the provincial Ministry of Transportation confirmed the Coquihala reopened following successful containment of the fire and debris removal.
Motorists were previously advised to divert via Highway 1 or Highway 3, though traffic has since normalized along the main route linking British Columbia's Lower Mainland to the Interior.
