Canada, Alberta announce new west coast oil pipeline to boost exports
The proposal would move more than 1 million barrels a day and aims to expand access to Asian markets while boosting jobs and revenues.
- On Thursday, Alberta Premier Danielle Smith announced the province officially applied to the federal Major Projects Office for national interest listing for the West Coast Oil Pipeline.
- British Columbia Premier David Eby said Thursday the province will not oppose the project, following a federal commitment to provide billions in support and maintain North Coast oil tanker restrictions.
- The proposed route follows the existing Trans Mountain corridor to a VLCC-capable port, utilizing a partnership between Alberta, Trans Mountain Corporation, and Pembina Pipeline.
- Prime Minister Mark Carney expects the project will generate $200 billion in direct investments and create 175,000 new jobs, while a tripartite agreement with the Oil Sands Alliance aims to expedite production.
- Smith targeted an Oct. 1, 2026, national interest listing, with design and construction permissions anticipated by Sept. 1, 2027, to help Alberta double oil production over the next 10 years.
