UW-Madison’s Proposed AI-Focused College Gets Regents’ OK
Computer science enrollment more than tripled since 2015, driving UW–Madison to establish a new college addressing AI challenges and interdisciplinary innovation.
- The UW Board of Regents approved Thursday to reorganize the School of Computer, Data & Information Sciences into the College of Computing and Artificial Intelligence during the Regents December meeting at UW-Whitewater.
- Campus leaders said the change responds to rising demand, with computer science majors more than doubling since 2015 to over 3,000 in 2025 and data science being one of the fastest-growing majors.
- Reorganization will unite the university's computing-related units by combining Computer Sciences, the Information School and Statistics, and Remzi Arpaci-Dusseau said `Artificial intelligence and computing are transforming every discipline` with operations expected by July 1, 2026, the first academic division added since 1983.
- The university will soon begin searching for the college's first dean and form a steering committee to guide the CDIS reorganization, with Chancellor Jennifer Mnookin saying, `This will be about more than simply building a new academic unit.`
- By focusing on AI and computing, the move positions UW-Madison to prepare students for computing’s role in every profession and build talent pipelines and research partnerships to help Wisconsin lead.
