USTR expects new Section 301 probes to cover most major trading partners
The U.S. Trade Representative targets unfair trade practices including forced labor and digital taxes across major partners, with tariffs as a possible outcome, officials said.
- On Feb 20, U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer announced USTR will launch several new investigations under Section 301 covering most major trading partners and pharmaceutical pricing.
- After the Supreme Court ruling on Friday struck down IEEPA tariffs ranging from 10% to 50%, President Donald Trump imposed a temporary global 10% import duty for 150 days and ordered new Section 301 investigations.
- Greer said the investigations will span industrial excess capacity, forced labor, drug pricing, discrimination against U.S. tech companies and digital goods, digital services taxes, ocean pollution, and trade practices for seafood and rice.
- USTR set an accelerated timetable and said tariffs remain an option if investigations involving Brazil and China uncover unfair trading practices.
- The move follows months in which the administration reached framework trade deals with a dozen countries and signed agreements with seven more, while officials warned partners they would use alternative tools if IEEPA tariffs were struck down.
