USS Abraham Lincoln Leaving San Diego for a New Home Port

The move will be a permanent change of station for about 5,000 crew members and their families, the Navy said.

  • The Navy announced Monday that the Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln will permanently relocate from Naval Air Station North Island in San Diego to Naval Base Kitsap near Seattle by the end of 2026.
  • Designed to facilitate long-planned maintenance at the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard & Intermediate Maintenance Facility, the shift enables the Navy to maximize the carrier's lifespan and combat readiness.
  • Lincoln returned to San Diego on Oct. 8 following a 322-day deployment in the Arabian Sea, setting a Navy record with 260 consecutive days at sea without a port visit.
  • This permanent change of station affects more than 5,000 sailors and Marines, with California Gov. Gavin Newsom confirming that service members and families have been offered mental health support resources.
  • Joining the USS Ronald Reagan at the Kitsap facility, the relocation aligns with the Navy's strategic dispersal of ships to maintain fleet lethality, readiness, and modern capability.
