USHL announces expansion plans to add Tier 1 Junior teams in California, Nevada and Arizona
The league said the move would widen its reach and tap a growing market as it competes for talent after an NCAA rule change.
On Thursday, the USHL announced a memorandum of understanding to establish new member clubs in California, Arizona, and Nevada, marking a significant expansion for the 16-team league.
USHL President and Commissioner Glenn Hefferan stated the move aims to create a "premier environment for player development" while partnering with the NHL and USA Hockey.
Twenty-One players on the U.S. men's gold-medal Olympic team played in the USHL, underscoring the league's role as a Tier 1 developmental pipeline.
The plan emerges as the junior hockey landscape shifts, with the USHL competing for talent against the Canadian Hockey League following recent NCAA eligibility rule changes.
Further details regarding the expansion will be revealed on June 24, marking the USHL's first major growth effort since adding the Madison Capitols in 2014.
