'Keep the Town Going': Iowa Town Fights Water Issues with the Help of USDA Aid
Grants totaling $4.7 million will fund water infrastructure and health care upgrades in five Iowa counties to address drought impacts and improve rural access, USDA said.
- On Wednesday, the U.S. Department of Agriculture Rural Development announced $4.72 million will fund five water and health projects in Fayette, Wayne, Taylor, Crawford, and Pottawattamie counties.
- Amid multi-year droughts, southwestern Iowa municipalities faced summers of shortages, boil orders and conservation mandates, prompting system grant requests.
- Healthcare facilities will receive $2 million for a dialysis addition at Wayne County Hospital, $1.1 million to renovate obstetrics at Palmer Lutheran Health Center, plus $580,000 for a new well in the City of Macedonia serving 267 residents.
- Bidding starts now with the goal of completing the City of Macedonia's well by fall next year, while Taylor County will receive a study called a 'necessary first step' for sanitary improvements for 278 residents.
- The USDA release credited Sexton and the leadership of President Trump and Secretary Rollins with helping rural Iowa address water and healthcare issues.
