US, Russia Allegedly Discuss Nuclear Plant Crypto Mining
Putin confirmed talks on shared operation of the plant and US interest in crypto mining using its power, which supplies about 20% of Ukraine’s electricity, officials said.
- On December 25, Kommersant reported that the US side and Russia explored operating the Russian-occupied Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant, with the US reportedly interested in crypto-mining there while supplying electricity to Ukraine.
- Russian forces seized the plant in March 2022, transferring control to Rosenergoatom, subsidiary of Rosatom, while Ukrainian plant specialists reportedly remained with Russian passports.
- The US proposed a tripartite model with Ukraine, the United States, and Russia each holding a 33% share of the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant, located near Enerhodar on the left bank of the Dnipro River, which before the war supplied roughly 20 percent of Ukraine’s electricity.
- The IAEA warned that safety principles are being violated and said the six reactors cannot be safely restarted under current conditions.
- Reported in late December, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, President of Ukraine, called the Zaporizhzhia plant a difficult peace plan element with no US compromise, while Kommersant reported December 24–25 US interest in crypto-mining there.
