US to play Belgium, Portugal and Germany in friendlies ahead of World Cup
USMNT will face top-ranked Belgium, Portugal, and Germany plus one TBD team in four friendlies as final preparations ahead of the World Cup roster announcement in late May.
- On Tuesday the U.S. Soccer Federation announced four pre-World Cup friendlies for the USMNT, including matches against Belgium and Portugal in Atlanta, a May 31 game in Charlotte, and a June 6 fixture versus Germany in Chicago.
- Two matches occur in the final international window before Mauricio Pochettino names the roster in late May, and Pot 1 teams prevent opponents from joining the U.S. group after the World Cup draw.
- Pochettino emphasized the challenge, saying `For us, this is a massive opportunity to challenge ourselves against some of the top teams in the world` as Portugal could feature Cristiano Ronaldo in the U.S. for the first time since Aug. 2, 2014.
- The friendlies will shape final roster choices as Pochettino uses these tune-ups ahead of the World Cup, while host cities Atlanta, Charlotte, North Carolina and Chicago will engage local fans, the federation said.
- With the draw pending, the schedule slots act as preparation for June's tournament, with the Charlotte opponent set by the World Cup draw in Washington, D.C. on Dec. 5 before the June 12 kickoff in Inglewood.
