US Supreme Court won't reinstate Republican-drawn congressional map in Missouri

- Last Thursday, the Missouri Supreme Court ruled the 2025 map cannot take effect until approved by voters, as Judge Ginger Gooch wrote, "The referendum petition was legal, sufficient, and timely." This unanimous decision upheld the challenge against the Republican-drawn districts.
- This decision preserves the Kansas City-based seat of Democratic Representative Emanuel Cleaver, which would have been dismantled under the redrawn boundaries. Missouri Secretary Denny Hoskins had argued that reverting to the older map would create significant logistical problems.
- President Donald Trump had championed the new map as part of a nationwide redistricting effort to improve Republican prospects; this ruling marks a rare setback for the party holding a slim 219-214 House majority.
