US conducts strikes in Syria in response to attack that killed two American soldiers
Operation Hawkeye Strike targeted over 70 ISIS sites in central Syria with more than 100 precision munitions, following a deadly ambush that killed two U.S. soldiers and a civilian interpreter.
- On Friday, U.S. forces struck multiple targets across central Syria in retaliation for a recent attack that killed two American soldiers, with strikes reported from Deir ez-Zor to Palmyra and Raqqa.
- The Dec. 13 ambush in Palmyra killed two Iowa National Guard members and American civilian interpreter Ayad Mansoor Sakat, while U.S. officials say ISIS attribution remains unclear.
- U.S. fighter jets, attack helicopters, and HIMARS systems, supported by Jordanian F-16s, destroyed more than 130 mortars and rockets during the strikes, more than 70 targets by about 2:15 a.m.
- Officials framed the strikes as a sharp escalation while about 1,000 U.S. troops in Syria build on nearly 80 missions since July, targeting `ISIS fighters, infrastructure, and weapons sites`, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said.
- The Pentagon named the mission Operation Hawkeye in honor of the slain soldiers from Iowa, CENTCOM opened an investigation, and partner raids provided intelligence refining strike targets.
