US sprinters Richardson and Coleman advance to the Stawell Gift semifinals in Australia
The American sprinters advanced in the grass handicap race after winning their heats, with Richardson eyeing a rare scratch victory.
American sprinters ShaCarri Richardson and Christian Coleman won their heats on Saturday and qualified for Monday's semifinals of the Stawell Gift, an annual 120-meter grass race held in a small Australian town near Melbourne.
Richardson caught opponents starting 10 metres ahead within 70 metres, then jogged the final 20 metres as the Olympic gold medallist dominated her heat at Central Park in Ballarat, thrilling the crowd.
Coleman, a world champion indoors and outdoors, faced a tougher challenge, needing the full 120 metres to drag in the field while racing from "scratch" on grass, a format he said tested him differently.
Richardson is bidding to become only the third woman to win the Gift from "scratch," consulting with Bree Rizzo, one of the two who achieved the feat. "I feel very confident in being number three," she said.
Both athletes return to the track on Easter Monday for semifinals and potential finals at the annual event held about 235 kilometres west of Melbourne, which draws more than 700 competitors to Stawell.
