U.S. skiers latest to be fined for entering closed backcountry in Rogers Pass
The judge accepted $1,000 fines for each skier, with $1,800 directed to Revelstoke Search and Rescue after the pair entered a closed avalanche zone.
Two U.S. skiers, Jacob A. Gordon and Jack William Elder, were fined by a provincial court judge for entering a closed backcountry area in Glacier National Park on April 14, violating federal park regulations.
Despite holding valid winter permits and checking Avalanche Canada bulletins, the men failed to consult the mandatory daily Parks Canada closure map, inadvertently entering the West Rogers Winter Restricted Area during an active closure.
Federal prosecutor Lucille Bordeleau noted the incident posed severe risks, including potential avalanche control via howitzer fire, while Justice George Leven concluded the incident "could have easily been avoided," despite the skiers' cooperation.
Each skier faces $1,000 fines due by Thursday, Nov. 5, with $1,800 of the total penalty directed to Revelstoke Search and Rescue to support ongoing safety operations.
Parks Canada continues to emphasize that 100 per cent compliance with closure protocols is essential, warning that repeated violations threaten long-term winter access in Rogers Pass for all recreationists.
