Report: LIV Golf's Financial Backer Dropping Plan for New League in 2027
The proposed 10-tournament reboot lacked enough player support as LIV Golf moves toward possible liquidation in bankruptcy court, the Financial Times reported.
On Wednesday, LIV Golf's main investor scrapped plans for "LIV 2.0" because the league lacked sufficient player support, The Financial Times reported, complicating efforts to emerge from Chapter 11 bankruptcy.
The Public Investment Fund of Saudi Arabia announced in April it would stop funding the league after the 2026 season, forcing the organization to seek alternative financial models.
BC Partners Credit had pledged $300 million for "LIV 2.0," which planned 10 tournaments and player equity; LIV CEO Scott O'Neil called this equity a "second bite of the apple."
A Thursday hearing in U.S. Bankruptcy Court will likely shift toward LIV Golf seeking asset liquidation, as star players including Jon Rahm, Brooks Koepka, and Sergio Garcia have departed.
The European tour declared that players signing with the new league would face ineligibility for the Ryder Cup, an ultimatum that significantly impacted the organization's ability to retain top talent.
