Voters reject proposed taxes tied to planned new arena for NHL’s Dallas Stars
The measure would have funded up to $700 million in bonds for a $3 billion mixed-use project, officials said.
Plano voters rejected Proposition A on Tuesday, a ballot measure that would have authorized new venue-related taxes to help finance a proposed Dallas Stars arena at The Shops at Willow Bend.
The proposed site at Willow Bend involves the last enclosed mall built in Texas, currently being demolished to make way for a $3 billion mixed-use development.
Unofficial results show 54.6% of more than 102,000 votes cast opposed the measure, which included taxes on tickets, parking, car rentals, hotel rooms, and facility-use fees of up to $5,000 per game.
Plano Mayor John Muns stated the development could still proceed despite the rejection, as the city explores alternative funding sources. Officials emphasized the vote concerned tax authorization, not the arena's feasibility.
The Dallas Stars hope to move about 20 miles north of the American Airlines Center by 2031, when their lease expires. The NBA's Dallas Mavericks are planning a similar project about 10 miles north of downtown.
