US signs emerging technology deal with Finland
The memoranda cover minerals, semiconductors, batteries and defense systems as Washington seeks stronger supply chains and closer security ties with Helsinki.
- On Thursday, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio signed technology, critical minerals, and energy agreements with Finnish Foreign Minister Elina Valtonen and Hungarian Foreign Minister Anita Orbán in Washington, bolstering security cooperation with both European allies.
- Rubio cited Finland's mining and processing expertise as vital for critical supply chains, including semiconductors and defense systems. The partnership focuses on "Critical and emerging technologies" to support technological collaboration between Washington and Helsinki.
- Orbán signed a memorandum codifying commitments to the Trump Peace Pipelines Framework, aiming to reduce reliance on adversarial energy sources. The agreement would "help Hungary to become an important player in the regional energy supply," Orbán said.
- The United States and Hungary also agreed to confront the "resurgence of far-left terrorism," which Rubio stated threatens law enforcement and critical infrastructure. The countries plan to increase information sharing to counter internationalized far-left movements.
- Separately, Finnish companies Nokia and ICEYE formalized a partnership with the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense last week to develop sovereign satellite systems. Hungary recently submitted a bill to make earlier nuclear cooperation agreements legally binding.
