US plastic surgeons group advises delaying gender surgery until age 19 due to insufficient evidence

  • On Tuesday, the American Society of Plastic Surgeons recommended delaying gender-affirming facial, chest and genital procedures until patients are at least 19, announced in Washington.
  • Evidence reviews cited by ASPS, including the Department of Health and Human Services report and the Cass review, led the group to reassess its position, citing low certainty data.
  • A 2024 ASPS report found more than 23,000 people aged 19 and under had plastic surgery, including over 5,300 breast reductions, while gender-affirming surgeries remain rare among minors.
  • Several hospitals and provider groups said they would stop offering gender-affirming care for minors after the ASPS statement, while HHS and Robert F. Kennedy Jr. praised ASPS for `standing up to the overmedicalization lobby and defending sound science`.
  • Leor Sapir wrote last year that ASPS had become the first major medical association to challenge the consensus, with the AMA saying evidence remains insufficient and supports deferring surgeries to adulthood.
