US, Philippines to reach deal on economic security zone 'sooner rather than later', US official says
The pact would set industrial priorities for the zone as Pax Silica grows to 15 members and could add one or two more next month.
- The United States and the Philippines are expected to reach a deal on a long-term economic security zone "sooner rather than later," senior official Jacob Helberg said on Thursday at the ATX summit in Singapore.
- Last month's agreement made the Philippines the 13th country to join Pax Silica, a technology supply chain alliance that has grown rapidly from seven founding members last September to 15 members.
- Helberg visited a proposed 4,000-acre site in New Clark City on Monday, joined by representatives from Agility Robotics and Joby Aviation, demonstrating high interest from United States firms.
- While Washington moves forward with the framework, the Philippines has not agreed to a request for diplomatic immunity for the zone, the Philippines development authority chief told Bloomberg on Monday.
- Pax Silica is projected to reach 16 members by the end of next month, while both parties will set sectoral industrial priorities for economic activities within the zone.
