U.S. suspect charged with conspiracy in Tumbler Ridge mass shooting
A 30-year-old western Washington defendant was arrested on a conspiracy charge after the shooting killed five students and an educator, officials said.
Acting U.S. Attorney Neil Floyd announced a 30-year-old Washington State resident was arrested and charged with conspiracy to murder persons abroad, stemming from the Feb. 10, 2026, mass shooting at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School in British Columbia.
On Feb. 10, 2026, 18-year-old Jesse Van Rootselaar opened fire at the school, killing five students and an educational assistant before taking their own life. Investigators later found the shooter's mother, Jennifer Jacobs, and half-brother, Emmett Jacobs, dead at their home.
Victims included 12-year-olds Abel Mwansa, Kylie Smith, Zoey Benoit, and Ticaria Lampert. Educator Shannda Aviugana-Durand, 39, and 13-year-old Ezekiel Schofield also died in the incident at the British Columbia school.
Officials scheduled a press conference for noon on Tuesday to announce further details regarding the investigation. Authorities confirmed the arrest stems from a federal criminal complaint, marking a significant development in the proceedings.
This arrest in Washington follows the Feb. 10, 2026, tragedy in Tumbler Ridge. Federal prosecutors are pursuing charges against a separate individual for conspiracy to commit murder abroad, expanding the legal investigation beyond the original shooter's death.
