Nigerian Citizen Extradited to Atlanta in $100M Tax Fraud Scheme

Prosecutors say the scheme filed more than 300 false tax returns and claimed over $100 million in refunds.

  • On Monday, federal authorities in Atlanta arraigned 43-year-old Nigerian citizen Akinade Adedeji Raheem on federal fraud charges following his extradition from Benin. Raheem remains detained in the custody of the Marshals Service pending further court proceedings.
  • Prosecutors allege Raheem and co-conspirators orchestrated a $100 million identity theft scheme between 2018 and 2023, filing more than 300 fake tax returns using stolen identities of accountants and taxpayers to claim fraudulent refunds.
  • The group directed fraudulent refunds to prepaid debit cards, then laundered proceeds through money orders and used cars shipped to Nigeria and other locations. U.S. Attorney Theodore S. Hertzberg said, "The scope of the alleged fraud is staggering."
  • If convicted, Raheem faces up to 20 years in prison for wire fraud and money laundering, plus 10 years for access device fraud and two years mandatory for aggravated identity theft. Co-defendant Abayomi Quadri Eletu remains in United Kingdom custody awaiting extradition.
  • Officials credited international partners, including Benin's Ministry of Justice, for securing the extradition. The IRS and Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration continue investigating the case alongside prosecutors from the Northern District of Georgia.
