U.S. News Unveils 2027 Best Elementary and Middle Schools Rankings
U.S. News updated its methodology using state education data and scored about 46,000 elementary schools and 24,000 middle schools on reading and math.
On Tuesday, October 20, 2026, U.S. News & World Report released the 2027 Best Elementary and Middle Schools rankings, evaluating roughly 46,000 public elementary schools and 24,000 middle schools nationwide at state and district levels.
Data from RTI International and the Department of Education inform the rankings, with half of each school's score reflecting student proficiency and half measuring performance compared to expectations based on socioeconomic characteristics.
Eric Brooks, U.S. News director of education data analysis, said the approach "offer a richer, more complete picture of how elementary and middle schools are driving student growth," helping identify standard-setting schools.
Rather than producing one national list, U.S. News ranks schools within each state and district, providing localized insights for families and educators to identify top-performing institutions in their communities.
Beyond the rankings, parents can access topical guides on K-12 education, including resources on mandatory kindergarten policies and strategies for middle schoolers transitioning into high school.
