U.S. News & World Report Reveals the 2027 Best Places to Retire
Midland scored high on affordability and retiree taxes as U.S. News weighted the rankings toward cost concerns, with more than 850 cities evaluated.
On Tuesday, October 27, 2026, U.S. News & World Report released its 2027 Best Places to Retire rankings, naming Midland, Michigan, the No. 1 destination for the second consecutive year.
U.S. News updated its weighting criteria this year to prioritize affordability, evaluating more than 850 U.S. cities to align rankings with financial concerns of Americans approaching retirement.
Midland secured the top spot through standout scores in overall affordability and retiree-friendly taxes. "Retirees are seeking a place that gives them a sense of security and comfort," said Megan Wood, assistant managing editor.
Traditional retirement havens in Florida and Texas dominated the top 250 list, while Weirton, West Virginia, claimed No. 2 and Paducah, Kentucky, ascended into the top 10.
The 2027 index indicates a clear national trend: retirees are prioritizing locations where savings stretch the farthest, factoring in quality of life, healthcare, and job market for those aged 55 and older.
