U.S. negotiators to ask Iran to release detained Americans: Washington Post
The U.S. team will seek the release of at least six Americans held in Iran as broader talks open, officials and reports said.
On Saturday, U.S. negotiators led by Vice President J.D. Vance, envoy Steve Witkoff, and Jared Kushner will open talks in Islamabad, seeking the release of at least six Americans held in Iran.
Iran has a documented history of arresting dual nationals on politically motivated charges, a practice rights advocates call "hostage diplomacy" to extract concessions from Western governments.
Kamran Hekmati and Reza Valizadeh are among those detained in Evin Prison; Hekmati requires medical care for bladder cancer while Valizadeh is serving a 10-year sentence on charges of "collaborating with a hostile government."
White House spokeswoman Anna Kelly stated, "These are ongoing discussions and the United States will not negotiate through the press," declining to elaborate on tactics or timing.
President Donald Trump warned that U.S. warships are being reloaded with "the best ammunition" to resume strikes if peace talks fail, while Iran warned they may skip the meeting if the ceasefire does not expand to Lebanon.
