US Navy taps 3 firms to build MUSVs for around $40M per vessel
Each agreement covers 10 vessels at about $40 million apiece, and three other companies will join the Navy’s drone marketplace.
- On Wednesday, the Navy awarded contracts to Galliano Marine Services, Huntington Ingalls Industries , and Saronic Technologies to build 30 Medium Unmanned Surface Vessels following successful at-sea testing.
- Launched in March, the Navy's marketplace model replaces the Modular Attack Surface Craft program to accelerate acquisition of mission-ready autonomous platforms from qualified defense firms.
- The 30-vessel procurement represents a $1.2 billion investment at roughly $40 million per unit, while testing assessed platforms on maritime awareness, independent navigation, and long-duration mission capabilities.
- Leidos, PacMar Technologies, and Sea Machines received $15 million each and entry into the Defense Department's drone marketplace, remaining eligible for follow-on production agreements.
- Acting Direct Reporting Portfolio Manager for Robotic and Autonomous Systems Chris Miller said Phase II will apply "laxer requirements" to encourage competition, with deliveries expected by fiscal 2027.
