Esper: Trump reimposing naval blockade on Iran ‘the right move’
Mark Esper said the blockade is the right move as the Pentagon adds sanctions and resumes maritime pressure on Iran.
U.S. Central Command will resume blockading maritime traffic entering and exiting Iranian ports on Tuesday at 4 p.m. EST, restoring measures President Trump ordered following renewed hostilities with the Islamic Republic.
Between April 13 and June 18, American forces enforced a similar blockade; Centcom redirected 140-plus compliant ships, disabled nine non-compliant vessels, and permitted more than 50 humanitarian ships to pass.
Declaring the U.S. "THE GUARDIAN OF THE HORMUZ STRAIT," President Trump announced a 20 percent shipping toll on vessels in the waterway, asserting fair and open use of the Strait for all other countries.
On CNN's Erin Burnett OutFront, Former Defense Secretary Mark Esper endorsed the blockade as the "right move," urging the administration to abandon the MOU signed last month with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian.
The Pentagon receives an additional 60 days to deploy forces against Iran without congressional approval, while the Treasury Department concurrently imposed sanctions on the Iranian regime and companies facilitating its oil trade.
