USPS Will Ship More Free COVID-19 Tests: Here's How to Order Them
- The US government plans to relaunch a program to provide free Covid-19 home tests to Americans, in an effort to address the rising number of Covid-19 hospitalizations since July. HHS Secretary Xavier Becerra stated that the program will allow households to order four free tests starting September 25.
- The US government has already shipped over 755 million free Covid-19 tests to individuals who requested them through Covidtests.gov. The program was previously suspended in May to ensure adequate supply, but it is now being revived to meet the increasing demand. Secretary Becerra also mentioned that the tests will be available for use until the end of 2023, and their expiration dates have been extended.
- To further strengthen manufacturing capacity and obtain over-the-counter Covid-19 tests, the HHS and ASPR have allocated $600 million to 12 US Covid-19 test manufacturers. The funding will benefit manufacturers in New Jersey, California, Texas, Washington, Maryland, Pennsylvania, and Delaware. Secretary Becerra emphasized the Biden-Harris Administration's efforts in reducing reliance on overseas manufacturing.
