US House backs Russia sanctions, Ukraine aid, in latest blow to Trump
The measure would provide more than $1 billion in aid and tighten sanctions on Russian banks, oil and mining interests.
- On Thursday, the House passed the Ukraine Support Act in a 226-195 vote, with 18 Republicans joining Democrats to authorize aid and impose sanctions against Russia despite the Trump administration's opposition.
- The legislation authorizes $8 billion in loans for Ukraine and NATO allies, plus more than $1 billion for Baltic security and Radio Free Europe, circumventing GOP leadership that previously blocked the vote.
- Rep. Carlos Gimenez, R-Fla., one of the 18 Republicans supporting the measure, said he is "Always proud to stand with our dear friends in Ukraine who are fighting to protect themselves from Putin."
- The bill now heads to the Senate, where it faces a steeper uphill climb with Republicans, and would require a signature from President Donald Trump to become law.
- Secretary of State Marco Rubio noted that negotiations between the two countries have stalled, while Trump claimed Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is "Far more difficult" to negotiate with than Putin.
