Health officials will review the 'Generally Recognized As Safe' status of many processed food ingredients linked to obesity and chronic diseases, affecting thousands of additives.
- On Sunday, U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. said the Food and Drug Administration will consider David Kessler's petition to revoke GRAS status for dozens of processed refined carbohydrates unless companies prove safety.
- The GRAS exemption enacted 1958 allows food companies to self-verify ingredient safety without government oversight, and Kennedy says estimates show 4,000 to 10,000 ingredients may be untracked.
- Health officials point to ultraprocessed foods comprising half of the average American diet, with David Kessler, former FDA head, warning they drive diabetes, hypertension and other chronic diseases.
- Kennedy said he will use gold-standard scientific review to assess GRAS ingredients and intends to close the loophole if he gets White House approval, adding the administration is "laser focused" on making whole foods affordable.
- The Consumer Brands Association says there is no `agreed upon scientific definition of ultra-processed foods` and stands ready to work with HHS and FDA as legal pressure mounts against ten manufacturers facing a December lawsuit.
