US forces board sanctioned vessel in Indian Ocean, Pentagon says

U.S. forces said the stateless supertanker was carrying 1.9 million barrels of Iranian crude and was the third such seizure since mid-April.

  • On Friday, the Indo-Pacific Command intercepted and boarded the sanctioned stateless oil tanker Davina in the Indian Ocean off Sri Lanka's southern coast, also known as the Lenore.
  • Washington sanctioned the Davina in October 2024 for Iranian oil trading as part of a blockade on Iran's sea trade, following Tehran's attacks on ships near the Strait of Hormuz.
  • Capable of carrying up to 2 million barrels of crude oil, the supertanker appeared almost fully laden with oil cargo, according to MarineTraffic tracking data showing the vessel off Sri Lanka on June 5.
  • "We will continue global maritime enforcement to disrupt illicit networks and interdict vessels providing material support to Iran, wherever they operate," the Indo-Pacific Command stated, signaling sustained enforcement.
  • Forces have intercepted multiple commercial and oil tankers in the Indian Ocean in recent months, reflecting an ongoing campaign to disrupt networks supporting Iran across the region.
