US FDA blocks some flavors of British American Tobacco's key vape brand Vuse

  • The U.S. health regulator has blocked the sale of six flavors of British American Tobacco's main vape brand, Vuse Alto, including the popular menthol flavor, due to insufficient evidence of added benefits for adult smokers compared to tobacco-flavored products.
  • Reynolds American Vapor plans to challenge the decision and seek a stay of enforcement. Vuse Alto, which accounted for 40% of U.S. e-cigarette sales, earned $1.6 billion from sales of menthol-flavored products in the past year.
  • The FDA's action is part of its efforts to regulate e-cigarette manufacturers and address the rise in youth e-cigarette use. Reynolds American can appeal the decision, challenge it in court, or submit a modified application.
