Judge Dismisses Trump Administration Lawsuit Against a Western NY City’s Sanctuary City Policies

- Rochester City Council strengthened the sanctuary policy this year, unanimously converting the ordinance into city law to bolster protections for immigrants and LGBTQ+ residents.
- Mayor Malik Evans said the city was pleased with the dismissal, while a Justice Department spokesman said the Department is reviewing the decision and did not immediately say if it would amend the complaint.
- The Department argued the local rules impede federal agents and violate the supremacy clause, while the City of Rochester has been a sanctuary city since 1986 and reaffirmed this in 2017 during the Trump administration.
