Coast Guard Brings First New Polar Icebreaker into Service in 25 Years
JUNEAU CITY AND BOROUGH, ALASKA, AUG 11 – The Storis will bolster U.S. Arctic operations and sovereignty with nearly 200 personnel planned for Juneau, funded by a $26 billion Coast Guard modernization program.
- On Wednesday, Aug. 7, 2025, the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Storis arrived in Auke Bay, with a commissioning ceremony scheduled for Sunday at Downtown Juneau.
- The vessel fills the gap while Polar Security Cutters are under construction, acquired after last year’s congressional spending bill funded its purchase.
- Built to extend U.S. presence in the Arctic, the 360-foot vessel was renamed Storis after a 1950s predecessor stationed in Juneau.
- On Friday, the cutter opens for tours from 8 to 10 a.m. at Auke Bay Ferry Terminal before departing Monday.
- The Storis will head the first of several icebreakers expected in coming years, representing a major expansion of Coast Guard Arctic capabilities.

USCG commissions first new polar icebreaker in 25 years
The United States Coast Guard has officially brought the medium icebreaker USCGC Storis (WAGB-21) into service at its Juneau, Alaska, base, marking the first acquisition of a new polar icebreaker in more than a quarter century.
