US coach Pochettino brushes off Turkey defeat, says winning group was main goal
Mauricio Pochettino said the loss mattered less because the United States still won Group D and advanced to the knockout stage.
On Thursday, the United States conceded a stoppage-time goal to lose 3-2 against Turkey in Inglewood, California, yet coach Mauricio Pochettino noted his side finished atop their World Cup group.
The United States had already secured the top spot after last week's 2-0 victory over Australia, prompting Pochettino to make wholesale lineup changes for the Turkey match.
Pochettino pushed back against post-match criticism, telling reporters, "At the moment no one congratulated us for finishing first in our group," while insisting the team is stronger than before.
While Australia and Paraguay drew 0-0, the United States prepares to face Bosnia and Herzegovina in Santa Clara on Wednesday for the World Cup round of 32.
The Argentine coach emphasized the team's ultimate objective remains winning the World Cup rather than achieving a perfect group record, shifting focus beyond the Turkey defeat.
