University of Chicago to pay $13.5m to settle ‘price-fixing cartel’ financial aid lawsuit
- The University of Chicago has reached a proposed settlement of $13.5 million in a class-action lawsuit alleging price-fixing and illegal collaboration by elite universities to limit financial aid for students.
- The lawsuit, filed in federal court in Chicago, accused more than a dozen universities, including U. Of C., of violating antitrust laws by artificially inflating the net price of attendance for students receiving financial aid.
- If approved, the settlement will cover students who received need-based financial aid from U. Of C. And enrolled as undergraduates since 2003, and the university has agreed to cooperate with plaintiffs during discovery.
